Dental Implants

  • What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is surgically anchored into your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place. The benefit of using implants is that they don't rely on neighboring teeth for support, they are permanent and stable. Implants are a good solution to tooth loss because they look and feel like natural teeth. Implant material is made from titanium which is compatible with body tissue.

  • In which cases dental implants are used?

    • Molar teeth losses

We can replace the missing teeth by implants and do a permanent restoration instead of a removable partial denture.

    • Single tooth losses

In single tooth losses, the traditional treatment option was the tooth-supported fixed bridge where the healthy adjacent teeth were sacrificed on behalf of the bridge. Instead of this, a single tooth implant and a crown can replace the missing tooth. The new tooth will look and function like a natural tooth.

    • Edentulous Mouths

People who wear full dentures will have difficulties in eating, smiling and speaking and this might create physical and psychological discomfort. Two treatment options are available in this case. In the first option 5 implants can be placed on the lower jaw (or 6 implants can be placed on the upper jaw) to support a fixed bridge or as a second option 2 implants can be placed on the front part of the jaw to keep the denture more secure and comfortable

  • What is treatment like ?

After a careful evaluation of the patients'dental and medical health history, we will determine if the patient is a good candidate for implants. A panaromic x-ray will be taken and bone structure will be examined. The implant(s) will be placed under local anesthesia. The operation will take about 30-90 minutes depending on the type and amount of the implants.

Treatment time will in general vary depending on the patient's unique situation. With the recent improvements in technology, it is often possible to get well functioning and esthetic looking teeth within a few days. In some cases it may be necessary to wait a longer time period before finishing the restoration in order to obtain an optimal result.

  • How long do dental implants last?

If the implants are placed properly and patient care is adequate, implants are expected to last for a life time. The patient must visit the dentist at least once a year for maintenance appointments.

  • What is the success rate of dental implants ?

With the recent improvements in techniques and materials, the success rate in implants has reached as high as 98-100 %. Success depends on the right diagnosis, proper surgery and patient care after the surgery. Smoking will negatively affect the success of the implant.
